@Ivan Thanks for your comment. I am going back to Sintra in a couple of weeks. I can't wait!

@Dewi Thanks too for your comment. You are very lucky to live in such a beautiful place! Your guidebook is a wonderful idea. I shall be sure to follow your directions and wander further than I did last time and of course share my findings here :-)
I did know about the video - this time I plan to find the spiral staircase!

Hi, I agree Pálacio & Quinta da Regalaria is a place worth visiting in Sintra. A fabulous palace of different styles dating back to 1697. Designed by Luigi Manini in the “revivalist” style of neo-maneline architecture, it is a place of discovery from the gardens, wells and towers to the mysterious caves. Did you know that Mariza, the great Portuguses Fado singer made a video in those spiral stairs that go down and down into the centre of the earth!.
As you go out of the gate at Quinta da Regalaria turn left and head up the hill towards Setais. Opposite is a little track, a very good short walk that will lead you out to the road, turn right to go to the Pena Palace or you can head down the road back to the centre of Sintra.
A great walk through cork oak trees and you can see other Quintas in the area on the way down.
You should definitely visit Sintra again, try the Convento dos Capuchos Capuchos Monastery, also known as Santa Cruz or the Cork Monastery, a quiet and tranquil place. Built in 1560 by Dom Álvaro de Castro fulfilling a promise made to his father, João Castro. A small monastery built in the rock. The tiny rooms lined with cork are a telling example of the humble and austere existance of the Franciscan friars who lived here.
I have produced a guide book on the area as I couldn't find any in the shops.

Sintra is truly beautiful, a very magical and special place where Quinta da Regaleira is definitely my favorite spot. Whenever I go to Portugal this is mandatory, I have to see it again and again... As you said, somehow it feels like a place of healing... So beautiful, so serene.

[...] Lisbon is the most beautiful place to visit for a romantic weekend away. I noticed that Go Lisbon have a lovely blog post on romantic places to visit so I encourage you to take a look there as well. I wholeheartedly agree with them that if you and your beloved are taking a Lisbon break this week you must make a visit to Sintra. [...]
