I live in Monchique and we have just installed a Portuguese Bread Oven in the garden. My husband used to make bread in our Aga in England but over here I'm not sure where to buy fresh (live) yeast, or indeed how to describe it. Do not fancy using dried yeast as live gives a much better flavour. Can you help please? Otherwise I'll be smuggling it back in my suitcase after visits to England.

Dear Lily,

thanks for make reference to my Easter Nest. Your Folar looks perfect! Congratulations!! :)

I just finished my own right now. It is resting, I hope it will be good!

The "arrufadas" are differents from place to place in Portugal. In Lisbon, "arrufadas" have sugar on the top and "Pão de Deus" have coconut powder, see here http://www.fabricoproprio.net/bolos-cakes/pao-de-deus-estaladinho/
But in Porto, "arrufadas" have coconut powder (like "Pão de Deus" in Lisbon).

Great site! I'll add to mine. If you need something just ask! =)

Happy Easter!!

Carla (Lisboa, Portugal)

PS - sorry my english...

Hi Vickie
Unfortunately I can't find anything at all for this bread. Google doesn't find any results and I've checked my books for you. Where abouts in Portugal did you eat it and was it sweet or savoury?

Thanks Gilbert. I was discussing Easter with a friend earlier - the only signs of it in the UK are a massive amount of Easter Eggs onsale and the occassional religious drama or film on TV. Holy week here doesn't really seem to take place.
As for me - I'm just happy to welcome in the Spring :-)

Dear Lily,

Your Easter Bread looks great!

Personally, I always felt that the now upcoming "Semana Santa" until Easter is a very special week in Portugal.

The colourful sweets in the shopping windows of the Pastelarias, the various processions... at least, the bright-shining Easter is a much more "Portuguese" festivity than the dark Christmas. At least, that's my impression.

Have a good time!
